Milton Manufacturing announces acquisition of
D&M Truck Top Company

Milton Manufacturing is pleased to announce its recent acquisition of D&M Truck Top Company.

“We’re very excited and proud to bring D&M Truck Top Company on board.” said Milton Manufacturing President and CEO Jim Green.

D&M Truck Top has been known as a strong business component in the truck cover industry. Like Milton Manufacturing, D&M was established in the mid-1940s and is also based in Detroit, Michigan.

D&M Truck Top began its business venture with the U.S. government as its first customer. Under the leadership of Albert Dworkin, the business moved to a new location; and the D&M product line included cab enclosures for pickup and stake trucks, as well as an assortment of awnings

Furthermore, fierce competition in the enclosure business led the visionaries at D&M to create and produce car undercovers—widely used before auto manufacturers discovered a way to prevent oil from leaking out of automobiles.

Sometime later, the company experienced a slight decline in sales, until Dworkin’s son-in-law, Aaron Greenspon originated the manufacture of vinyl, canvas and steel forklift cab enclosures—still in robust production today.

The current line of D&M products includes vehicle rain covers, and heavy-duty vinyl nylon material covers with integrated windshields, as well as other innovative products. For instance, for machines not equipped with a factory guard, D&M constructs custom-made framework with a safety-glass windshield and options for two-way non-rusting zippers, electric wiper and heater.

D&M Truck Top Company President Aaron Greenspon will have an active role in the company transition. It is Aaron’s feeling that, “D & M Truck Top will fit well with the future plans of Milton and will prove to be a viable asset to the Milton Team.” Further Aaron stated that, “The resources of Milton are a lot more efficient and we will be able to produce and ship our products much faster in order to better satisfy the needs of our customers.” In addition, Roman Braginsky and Vladimir Yershov, both of D&M, will be joining the Milton Manufacturing team.

“We look forward to a successful business collaboration, and we believe that the addition of the high-quality and innovative D&M Truck Top Company to our own manufacturing business will yield stellar results for our customers.” Green noted.

Previously located in Detroit at 8525 Puritan Street, The D&M operations are currently housed at the Milton Manufacturing, Galactic Headquarters 301 E. Grixdale Street Detroit 48203.

Milton Manufacturing awarded HUBZone certification

As of January 10, 2011 the US Small Business Administration has certified Milton Manufacturing as a HUBZone concern. This provides Milton Manufacturing with the opportunity to expand its government contracting growth plans and continue its track record of expansion. Milton Manufacturing President & CEO, Mr. Jim Green, states “we hope this (certification) will enable Milton Manufacturing to grow its workforce during the years to come.”

Both the Federal Government and Prime Contractors to the Federal Government have a HUBzone sourcing goal of 3%.  By obtaining this certification Milton manufacturing is helping their customers meet their subcontracting goals and consequently receive more contracts. This certification will also offer Milton Manufacturing opportunities in the federal marketplace.

The Historically Underutilized Business Zones (HUBZone) Empowerment Contracting program promotes economic development and employment growth in designated urban areas with the goal of revitalizing them into sustainable communities.

While there are numerous qualifying factors in the certification application, the two key eligibility requirements state that the business must be located in a historically underutilized business zone (HUBZone) and at least 35 percent of the company employees must reside in a HUBZone. Milton has met both these requirements.

At Milton Manufacturing we take our role as a corporate citizen very seriously.

Our goal is to expand our manufacturing capabilities, provide the City with an expanded tax base and stay actively involved with various area businesses, organizations, and community groups.

The congratulatory letter that we received from the Office of the HUBZone Program ended with these words of encouragement: “We wish you the best of luck with your HUBZone certified concern – your success will help improve the economic future of the HUBZone in which you operate.”

Press Break Forming at MILTON Manufacturing

PRESS BREAK FORMING is one of the original capabilities that MILTON Manufacturing started with 60 years ago. For many years it was a driving force in the company, now it is simply one of the capabilities we offer our customers.

In this process a Brake Press exerts a force on a set of dies in order to bend, form or punch metal. You will see a few of MILTON’s press breaks in this short video.

MILTON Manufacturing, here in Detroit Michigan, provides it’s customers with exceptional turnaround times and improved designs from concept through production. To see more of our capabilities or to learn how we can go to work for you, explore this blog and contact us today – 313-366-2450.

Insert Clinching at MILTON

INSERT CLINCHING is a mechanical fastening method used to join a nut or or PEM® fastener to a piece of sheet metal. using special tools to plastically form a mechanical interlock between the sheet metals. The tools consist of a punch and a die. The punch forces the two layers of sheet metal into the die cavity forming a permanent connection. A permanent connection is made between the metal and the ‘clinch nut’ or the PEM® nut. This video shows one of MILTON Manufacturings Insert Clinching machines in action.

Drop Hammer Forming in Action

DROP HAMMER FORMING is just one of the capabilities we offer our customers at MILTON Manufacturing. The process involves a pneumatic drop hammer with a matched male and female die set to form complex part contours and shapes.

At MILTON, when the dies of the drop hammer make contact, the vibration can be felt 100 yards away – it is one powerful machine! Notice how forming the part captured in the video takes multiple machine “hits” to bring the metal to its final shape.

CNC Turret Punching in Action at MILTON Manufacturing

CNC TURRET PUNCHING is just one of many metal fabricating capabilities here at MILTON Manufacturing in Detroit, Michigan.

Turret Punching creates shapes in sheet metal by punching a series of basic shapes such as circles and rectangles. The shapes are selected from a number of tools on a rotating turret under computer numerical control, also known as CNC.

Turret punching is a cost effective method for cutting sheet metal into two-dimensional (2-D) shapes and cutouts in moderate to long runs. Edges are usually clean due to the rapid shearing action of the tools.

MILTON Manufacturing then uses its other capabilities to turn this 2-D part into a 3-D part and build the finished product.

CNC Turret Punching is just one of many capabilities we utilize to provide our customers with exceptional turnaround times and improved designs from concept through production.
